This exceptional specimen is from the Lower Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous Period, approximately 113 to 100 million years ago, and was discovered in Mitsinjo, Madagascar, a location celebrated for yielding some of the world’s most vividly preserved ammonite fossils.

Cleoniceras is a genus of smooth, fast-moving, open-water ammonites, easily distinguished by their streamlined, coiled shells. They were highly successful marine cephalopods, swimming the warm Cretaceous seas.
