Geology & Origin:

Mitsinjo, Madagascar, during the Early Cretaceous, was part of a warm, shallow sea that supported diverse marine life. Over millions of years, sedimentary deposits covered and preserved the remains of ammonites like Cleoniceras. The fossilization process retained the beautiful aragonite layer of the shell, producing the highly sought-after iridescent “Mother of Pearl” effect that shimmers with vibrant colors.

It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
