Age: Pleistocene

Location: Madagascar

Copal is hardened tree resin, & a younger variation of Amber. These Copal samples are packed with inclusions, including flies, ants, bugs, and more! They are generally easy to see with the naked eye, though we recommend using a magnifying aid to view the inclusions. Copal can tend to be cloudier than Amber.

Copal & Amber Inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. which became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday.

*We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen so to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning frozen detail. Inclusions can include such specimens as flies, gnats, midges, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, seeds, plants & more.

Description

This fascinating specimen is a genuine piece of Pleistocene Copal with Inclusions from Madagascar. Copal is fossilised tree resin and is the younger precursor to Amber, typically dating from a few hundred thousand to several million years old. This particular piece dates to the Pleistocene Epoch, approximately 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago.

Unlike Amber, Copal has not undergone full polymerisation and hardening over millions of years, making it lighter in appearance and often clearer or more translucent. These Madagascan Copal specimens are packed with inclusions such as flies, ants, beetles, spiders, and plant fragments, frozen in time and remarkably well-preserved. The level of visible detail is extraordinary, and although most inclusions can be viewed with the naked eye, we highly recommend using a magnifying glass or loupe to fully appreciate the intricate and delicate details of these tiny prehistoric creatures.

Copal inclusions represent a unique snapshot of an ancient forest ecosystem and provide valuable insight into life during the Pleistocene. As tree resin oozed from trunks, it trapped small insects and plant debris. This organic material became entombed as the resin hardened, preserving an incredible record of the past.

Whether you’re a fossil collector, natural history enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique piece of ancient organic art, this Copal with Inclusions specimen is a striking and educational addition to any collection.

Pleistocene Information

The Pleistocene Epoch (2.58 million – 11,700 years ago) was a time of repeated ice ages, shaping Earth's landscapes and ecosystems. Massive glaciers advanced and retreated, covering large parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. This period saw the rise of megafauna, including woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant ground sloths, and cave bears. Early humans (Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo sapiens) spread across the world, developing tools, art, and early societies. Many species adapted to harsh, cold climates, but as the Ice Age ended, global warming and human hunting contributed to the extinction of many large mammals. The Pleistocene transitions into the Holocene, the current epoch, marking the beginning of human civilization.
