Description
This listing features a 100% genuine Crinoid Star Stem fossil from the Oxford Clay Formation, dating back to the Jurassic Period (~163 to 157 million years ago). It was discovered at Tidmoor Point, Dorset, UK, a renowned locality for Jurassic marine fossils.
Crinoids are marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, the same group as sea stars and sea urchins. They first appeared during the Middle Cambrian, over 500 million years ago, and many species still survive today. Crinoids that remain attached to the seafloor by a stalk are commonly referred to as “sea lilies”, though they are animals—not plants.
The “star stem” appearance comes from the uniquely shaped ossicles (segmental plates) that make up the crinoid stalk. These fossilised stems are often beautifully symmetrical, with star-shaped cross-sections that make them highly collectable and visually appealing.
Crinoids were filter feeders, extending their feathery arms into the ocean currents to trap plankton and other food particles. Their hard parts, especially the stalk, are commonly preserved in fossil form due to their high mineral content.
This specimen has been naturally preserved in fine marine sediment and displays the classic star-shaped segments typical of crinoid stems. Its geological origin in the Oxford Clay also places it in the same marine ecosystem that once included plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and ammonites.
