Description
CRIOCERAS MAJORIENSIS Fossil Heteromorph Ammonite – Lower Barremian, Cretaceous – Alps, France
About the Fossil:
This well-preserved Crioceras majoriensis heteromorph ammonite fossil originates from the Lower Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous period (~129-125 million years ago) and was discovered in the Alps, France. Crioceras is a genus of heteromorph ammonites, characterized by their loosely coiled, uncoiled, or irregular shell morphologies, distinguishing them from the more common spiral ammonites.
During the Early Cretaceous, ammonites like Crioceras majoriensis thrived in shallow marine environments, where they played an essential role in marine food chains. Their distinctive ribbed and ornamented shells indicate they had adaptations for buoyancy and movement, allowing them to navigate ancient seas differently from standard ammonites. The Lower Barremian deposits of the French Alps are world-famous for their diverse ammonite faunas, making this specimen a valuable addition to any collection.
