Geological Setting – Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias, Early Jurassic
This ammonite originates from the renowned Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, dating to approximately 190–200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic.
At the time of deposition, Dorset lay beneath a warm shallow sea teeming with marine life including ammonites, belemnites, fish, crustaceans, and marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs. Fine marls and mudstones accumulated in calm offshore waters, rapidly burying shells and allowing exceptional fossil preservation.
Stonebarrow Cliff and Charmouth remain internationally important fossil sites, producing some of the most iconic ammonites in Europe, including rare pyritised forms such as this Crucilobiceras.
Fossil Species – Crucilobiceras Ammonite
Crucilobiceras is a distinctive Early Jurassic ammonite genus within the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. Ammonites were highly successful marine predators related to modern squid and cuttlefish, living throughout the Jurassic seas in extraordinary diversity.
Crucilobiceras is recognised for its characteristic morphology:
- Strong ribbed ornamentation
- Well-defined whorl shape
- Classic spiral coiling with robust shell structure
- Distinctive Early Jurassic appearance
This genus is an important part of Lower Jurassic ammonite assemblages and is highly valued by collectors for its bold form and association with the famous Charmouth fossil beds.
Golden Pyrite Mineralisation – A Natural Metallic Finish
One of the most striking features of this fossil is its natural golden pyrite preservation. Pyritisation occurs when iron sulphide minerals form within and around the shell during fossilisation, creating a brilliant metallic sheen.
Golden pyrite ammonites from Lyme Regis are prized because:
- They are visually spectacular and increasingly rare
- Pyrite highlights fine shell ribbing and detail
- Each specimen is completely unique in pattern and finish
- They make exceptional display centrepieces
This fossil is both a scientifically significant ammonite and a naturally beautiful collectible mineralised specimen.
