Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern-day nautilus, and although they resembled a nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living Coleoids, i.e. octopus, squid, and cuttlefish!
These stunningly beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazingly colourful inner chambers of the fossil.

Description

This stunning specimen is a genuine fossil ammonite from the Cretaceous Period (approx. 145–66 million years ago), unearthed in the fossil-rich sediments of Madagascar. These ammonites have been expertly sliced and polished to reveal their beautiful inner structure—showcasing the intricate chambers that once helped the living animal control its buoyancy in ancient tropical seas.

Ammonites were marine cephalopods, closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. They thrived in Earth’s oceans for over 175 million years, first appearing in the Devonian period and going extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, along with the dinosaurs. Despite their resemblance to a snail’s shell, ammonites are molluscs with a rich evolutionary link to Coleoids, rather than gastropods.

The sliced and polished halves highlight the mineralisation and preservation of the fossil over millions of years. The inner chambers may be filled with calcite, aragonite, agate, or other minerals that give each piece its unique character. These fossils make for striking display pieces, educational tools, or meaningful gifts.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
