Description
This stunning cut and polished fossil is a specimen of Metalegoceras sundaicum, a true ammonoid from the Lower Permian period, originating from East Timor, Indonesia. This genus belongs to the extinct order Goniatitida, and this particular species lived during the early part of the Permian era, approximately 290 to 270 million years ago.
Ammonoids like Metalegoceras are ancient marine cephalopods that predate the better-known Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites. They had tightly coiled, chambered shells, and their internal structures are often beautifully preserved. This specimen has been expertly cut and polished, revealing the intricate internal suture patterns and fossilised chamber detail that define its beauty and geological significance.
The fossil comes from Permian marine deposits found in the region of East Timor—one of the few known locations where this particular species has been found. The shell’s cross-section displays complex geometry and mineral replacement that occurred during fossilisation, creating a captivating and natural work of art.
