Description
An extraordinary example of Cut and Polished Yorkshire Fossil Petrified Wood from the Lower Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 182 million years old. This fossilised wood specimen was discovered in the famous fossil beds around Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK — a locality renowned for its marine deposits and occasional terrestrial fossils such as wood fragments preserved in sediment.
This unique piece of fossilised wood has been professionally sliced and polished on one face to reveal its ancient growth rings and internal cellular structure. The fossilisation process, known as permineralisation, has replaced the original organic tissues with silica and iron minerals, resulting in a stone-like specimen with intricate patterning and a rich blend of earthy hues.
Fossil Type: Petrified Wood (Fossilised terrestrial plant material)
Geological Age: Lower Jurassic, Toarcian Stage
Depositional Environment: While most Whitby fossils come from deep marine black shales, occasional driftwood fragments were transported into the marine setting and became buried in the fine-grained, anoxic sediments of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. These low-oxygen conditions helped preserve the wood and enabled mineral replacement processes.
Morphological Features:
- Well-preserved growth ring structure
- Clear woody grain with mineralised cell cavities
- Polished surface enhances pattern and colour contrast
Notable:
- Sourced from Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK
- Cut and polished face reveals exquisite internal structure
- Rare fossil wood from a predominantly marine deposit
- Excellent for collectors, decorators, educators, and geology enthusiasts
- Actual specimen shown in the image
Authenticity: All of our fossils are 100% genuine natural specimens and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The photograph displays the exact item you will receive. Each cube or square in the scale rule equals 1cm – please refer to the image for full sizing.
A genuine piece of Jurassic history, this Petrified Wood fossil offers a glimpse into the vegetation of ancient landscapes that once bordered Jurassic seas. A visually striking and scientifically fascinating addition to any collection.
