Geological Setting & Age
This ammonite comes from the Whitby Mudstone Formation, part of the Middle Lias sequence formed during the Toarcian stage of the Early Jurassic. At this time, much of what is now Yorkshire was submerged beneath a shallow marine sea, where fine sediments accumulated on the seabed.
The depositional environment was relatively low in oxygen, which helped preserve marine life in remarkable detail. Over millions of years, these sediments lithified into shale and mudstone, encasing ammonites and other marine organisms. Whitby remains one of the most important fossil sites in the UK, known for its abundance and quality of Jurassic fossils.
Classification & Natural History
Dactylioceras belongs to the family Dactylioceratidae, within the order Ammonitida. These extinct marine cephalopods were closely related to modern squid and octopus, but possessed coiled external shells.
Dactylioceras species are particularly well known for their role as index fossils, commonly used in stratigraphy to identify and correlate rock layers of Early Jurassic age. Their widespread distribution and rapid evolution make them valuable tools for geological dating.
Morphology & Distinctive Features
This ammonite displays the characteristic evolute coiling of Dactylioceras, where each whorl is clearly visible and not tightly enveloped. The shell is ornamented with fine, regular ribs that radiate from the centre outward, often splitting or branching as they extend across the whorl.
