Description
This beautifully preserved fossil specimen is a genuine Dactylioceras tenuicostatum ammonite from the Lower Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic Period, approximately 182 million years old. Collected from the renowned fossil beds at Eype, Dorset, United Kingdom, this ammonite is an iconic representative of the Jurassic marine fauna that once thrived along the ancient coastlines of what is now southern England.
Dactylioceras tenuicostatum is known for its finely ribbed, discoidal shell and relatively narrow whorls, which gave it a streamlined shape. These ammonites were nektonic (actively swimming) cephalopods that played an important role in Jurassic marine ecosystems. Their shells are often used as index fossils due to their abundance and distinct evolutionary stages, which help to date the rock layers they are found in.
This particular fossil was discovered by our expert field team members Alister and Alison on 19 July 2024, and has been meticulously cleaned, prepped, and preserved by Alison.
