Genuine Dalmanites myops Trilobite Fossil

This carefully chosen specimen is a genuine Dalmanites myops trilobite fossil from Mortimer Forest, near Leintwardine in Herefordshire, UK. It dates from the Lower Ludlow interval of the Silurian Period and represents an extinct marine arthropod that lived more than 420 million years ago.

The combination of a named trilobite species, recognised geological interval and recorded British locality gives this fossil excellent scientific, educational and collectable interest. Lower Ludlow Silurian Geology

The Ludlow Epoch forms part of the later Silurian Period, an important chapter in Earth history long before the appearance of dinosaurs, mammals or flowering plants. During the Lower Ludlow, the region that is now the Welsh Borderland and western Herefordshire lay beneath a marine environment.

Fine mud, silt and the remains of marine organisms accumulated across the ancient seabed. These sediments were gradually buried, compacted and transformed into fossil-bearing mudstone, siltstone and related sedimentary rocks. The resulting strata preserve evidence of diverse marine communities that inhabited the Silurian seas.

Animals living within these environments included trilobites, brachiopods, cephalopods, gastropods, bivalves, bryozoans, corals and crinoids. Early fish also occupied Silurian waters, while the first established terrestrial ecosystems were beginning to develop on nearby land.

After the trilobite died or shed its exoskeleton, the remains settled onto the seabed and became buried within sediment. Rapid burial reduced disturbance by currents, scavengers and decay. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater and geological pressure helped preserve the exoskeleton as an impression, mould or mineralised fossil.

Natural differences in colour, matrix coverage, completeness, surface texture and fine fractures are authentic features created during burial and fossilisation. Each genuine trilobite specimen therefore preserves its own individual geological history.

Dalmanites myops Trilobite Characteristics

Dalmanites myops belongs to the family Dalmanitidae within the order Phacopida. Dalmanitid trilobites are recognised for their well-developed eyes, broad cephalon and characteristically tapered body form.

Like other trilobites, the exoskeleton was divided lengthwise into three lobes: a raised central axial lobe and two flatter pleural lobes. It was also divided across the body into three principal regions. These were the cephalon or head shield, the articulated thorax and the pygidium or tail shield.

The cephalon of Dalmanites typically includes a prominent central glabella, which covered parts of the digestive system. Large compound eyes were positioned on either side of the head. These eyes were composed of numerous calcite lenses and provided the animal with a broad view of its surroundings.

The thorax consisted of multiple articulated segments, allowing the trilobite to bend and potentially enrol for protection. Each segment included a central axial ring and paired pleural extensions. The pygidium formed the rear section of the exoskeleton and incorporated several fused segments.

Dalmanites species are also known for their comparatively streamlined outline and pointed extensions associated with the head or tail region. Depending on the preservation of this individual specimen, visible features may include parts of the cephalon, glabella, eyes, thoracic segments, axial lobe, pleurae, pygidium or surrounding Silurian matrix.

An Extinct Marine Arthropod

Trilobites were an exceptionally successful group of marine arthropods that first appeared during the Cambrian Period and survived for more than 250 million years. They disappeared during the end-Permian mass extinction, approximately 252 million years ago.

They were distant relatives of modern arthropods such as crustaceans, insects, spiders and horseshoe crabs. Their hard, jointed exoskeleton provided protection and supported the body while allowing movement through articulated segments.

During life, a trilobite periodically shed its exoskeleton as it grew. This process, known as moulting, means many trilobite fossils represent discarded exoskeletons rather than complete dead animals. Shed remains could separate along natural joints, producing isolated heads, tails or groups of thoracic segments.

Dalmanites myops probably lived on or close to the seabed, where it searched for small organisms, organic particles or other available food. Its large compound eyes suggest that vision played an important role in detecting movement, finding food and avoiding predators within the Silurian marine environment.

Mortimer Forest Fossil Locality
