This listing offers a fine example of the rare ammonite DARELLIA recticostata, collected from the Upper Toarcian Stage of the Jurassic Period at Ravenscar, North Yorkshire, UK. A visually striking and scientifically important fossil, this ammonite represents a classic species from the world-famous Yorkshire coast

- Type: Ammonite (Extinct Marine Cephalopod)
- Species: Darellia recticostata
- Known for its distinctive straight ribbing pattern and slender form
Geological Context:
- Era: Mesozoic
- Period: Jurassic
- Stage: Upper Toarcian (~182–174 million years ago)
- Formation: Likely Whitby Mudstone Formation or Ravenscar Group equivalent
- Depositional Environment: Low-energy offshore marine basin with fine silt and clay sedimentation; conditions ideal for preservation of complete ammonites and marine vertebrates
Morphological Features:
- Narrow, planispiral shell with strong, straight ribs (recticostate ornamentation) running across the flanks
- Involute coiling and compressed whorl section with a relatively small umbilicus
- Shell surface typically smooth between ribs and often well-preserved in laminated shale
Scientific Importance:
- Darellia recticostata is a diagnostic species within the Upper Toarcian and is used as a biostratigraphic marker in regional Jurassic zonation
- Its precise morphology helps define subtle faunal and ecological shifts during the Toarcian oceanic changes, including known anoxic events
