Description
Fossil Type & Species:
This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Deshayesites deshayesi, one of the most recognisable ammonite species of the Early Cretaceous. This specimen was found in Ryazan, Russia, and is part of the curated Alice Purnell Collection, known for its scientifically important and well-preserved fossil specimens.
Geological Formation & Insight:
Deshayesites deshayesi is a key species in the Deshayesitidae family and serves as a primary index fossil for the Early Aptian Stage of the Lower Cretaceous (~125–113 million years ago). Its well-defined, finely ribbed and moderately evolute shell makes it ideal for correlating stratigraphic layers across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The fossil was collected from marine sediments in the Ryazan region of Russia, which during the Early Cretaceous was part of a vast inland sea on the edge of the ancient Tethys Ocean. These marine deposits — often grey, fine-grained marls or clays — yield ammonites with exceptional shell preservation, particularly members of the Deshayesites genus.
Ryazan is one of the classic Aptian fossil sites in Russia and has produced many fine ammonite specimens that are highly valued by collectors and researchers alike.
