Description
Fossil Type & Species:
This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Deshayesites forbesi, a prominent and highly recognisable ammonite species from the Aptian Stage of the Lower Cretaceous. This beautifully preserved specimen was collected in Madagascar, one of the world’s most important regions for fossil ammonites, and is part of the highly respected Alice Purnell Collection.
Geological Formation & Insight:
Deshayesites is a genus of ammonites in the Deshayesitidae family, known for their ornate ribbing, flattened shells, and evolutionary significance. The species Deshayesites forbesi is a classic biostratigraphic index fossil for the Early Aptian (~125 to 113 million years ago), helping geologists date rock strata globally.
This fossil comes from marine limestones and marls formed in the Aptian Stage of the Early Cretaceous Period. At that time, Madagascar was part of the Gondwanan supercontinent and was surrounded by warm, shallow seas teeming with ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, and marine reptiles.
Ammonites from Madagascar are renowned for their exceptional preservation, sometimes retaining opalescent shell material or occurring in aesthetic display-quality limestone nodules. Deshayesites forbesi, in particular, is prized for its finely ribbed shell and distinctive spiral form.
