£30.00

For sale is a beautiful Desmoceras medium fossil ammonite, featuring incredible natural iridescence preserved from its original mother of pearl shell. This fossil dates back to the Lower Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous Period, approximately 113 to 100 million years ago, and was discovered in Maritano, Madagascar, a region famous for its exquisitely preserved ammonites.

Desmoceras is a genus of smooth, rounded ammonites known for their relatively simple shell ornamentation and superb preservation quality. During the Early Cretaceous, these cephalopods thrived in the shallow tropical seas that covered much of what is now Madagascar. Their shells, originally made of aragonite, occasionally fossilised with a stunning nacreous layer, giving rise to the gorgeous iridescent effect we see today.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
