DIACALYMENE Trilobite Fossil Nodule Positive & Negative Upper Ordovician Ktaoua Group Morocco Authentic Specimen

Original price was: £48.00.Current price is: £43.20.

This listing features a finely preserved trilobite fossil of the genus Diacalymene, preserved as a positive and negative split nodule from the Ktaoua Group, located in the Anti-Atlas Region of Morocco. This authentic fossil dates to the Upper Ordovician Period and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The photo displays the actual specimen you will receive.

Diacalymene trilobites are well-known from Upper Ordovician marine deposits in North Africa and represent a genus within the:

  • Order: Phacopida
  • Family: Calymenidae

The Ktaoua Group consists of siliciclastic marine sediments, deposited in a shallow epicontinental sea during the Katian Stage of the Upper Ordovician (~450 million years ago). The nodular preservation is a result of early diagenetic concretion formation, which encased and preserved the trilobite within fine marine silts and muds.

Morphological Features:

  • Elongated, semi-oval cephalon (head)
  • Thorax with well-defined axial lobes and pleurae (segments)
  • Rounded pygidium (tail) with detailed segmentation
  • Fossil preserved in both the convex (positive) and concave (negative) halves of the nodule

Diacalymene is appreciated for its symmetrical body plan, high-quality preservation, and complete three-part segmentation, making it a great teaching and display specimen.

Specimen Details:

  • Genus: Diacalymene (likely Diacalymene ouzregui)
  • Fossil Type: Trilobite (positive and negative halves in nodule)
  • Geological Formation: Ktaoua Group
  • Geological Age: Upper Ordovician (Katian Stage)
  • Location: Anti-Atlas Region, Morocco
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine siliciclastic basin
  • Order: Phacopida
  • Family: Calymenidae

This fossil is ideal for collectors, students, and educators looking to own a complete and naturally preserved trilobite fossil from a globally renowned fossil site.

Scale rule squares/cube = 1cm. Please refer to the image for full sizing.

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
