Name: Diacalymene sp.

Specimen: Trilobite

Age: Ordovician

Location: Morocco

Size (picture scale cube=1cm):  80 x 55 x 24mm (3.15 x 2.17 x 0.94 inches)

Fossil Trilobites were marine based, and some of the most successful of their time, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years! The name Trilobite, meaning ‘Three Lobes’, was given to them due to their body being made up of three sections. Although it is not uncommon to find whole Trilobite fossils, it is more common to find them incomplete, missing different parts of the three sections they are made up from; head, body & tail. These fossils vary in size, ranging from only a few millimetres to some species measuring in at around 12 inches.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Step into the prehistoric oceans of the Ordovician Period with this genuine fossil of Diacalymene sp., a beautifully preserved trilobite from the fossil-rich deposits of Morocco. Trilobites were one of the most successful and widespread marine creatures in Earth’s history, flourishing for over 270 million years before going extinct in the Permian mass extinction.

Diacalymene is a genus of trilobite in the order Phacopida, family Calymenidae, and is characterised by its distinctively segmented body, pronounced cephalon (head), and defined glabella. These trilobites are known for their smooth exoskeletons and can often be found in a partially enrolled state, which they assumed defensively—much like modern pill bugs.

Geological Significance:

This specimen comes from Ordovician-aged marine strata in Morocco, a region globally known for its exceptionally preserved trilobite fossils. During the Ordovician, the area that is now North Africa was submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea teeming with early life forms. Trilobites, among the dominant creatures of the time, evolved a variety of complex adaptations, from compound eyes to moulting mechanisms.

About Trilobites:

The name “Trilobite” means “three lobes”, referring to the creature’s body structure:

  • Cephalon (head)
  • Thorax (segmented body)
  • Pygidium (tail)

Fossilised trilobites vary in size—from just a few millimetres to over 30cm. This specimen is a fine example of a mid-sized trilobite, preserved with excellent detail in the exoskeletal ridges and lobes.

Although whole trilobites are prized, it is more common for fossil hunters to find partial remains due to the animal’s moulting process and the immense age of these marine arthropods. That’s what makes this relatively complete Diacalymene fossil such a valuable collector’s item.

ACTUAL AS SEEN:

The photo shows the exact specimen you will receive. Each fossil is hand-selected, fully authentic, and photographed without enhancement. The 1cm scale cube included helps with accurate sizing, but please note irregular shapes may affect measurement perception. Colours may vary depending on lighting and screen settings.

Once sold, this listing will be refreshed with a new specimen, complete with new photographs and dimensions. We recommend saving or screenshotting the item image after purchase for your own records. We also maintain a full archive of our listed specimens.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
