Fossil Trilobites were marine based, and some of the most successful of their time, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years! The name Trilobite, meaning ‘Three Lobes’, was given to them due to their body being made up of three sections. Although it is not uncommon to find whole Trilobite fossils, it is more common to find them incomplete, missing different parts of the three sections they are made up from; head, body & tail. These fossils vary in size, ranging from only a few millimetres to some species measuring in at around 12 inches.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

This listing features a genuine Diacalymene sp. Trilobite fossil from the Ordovician Period, discovered in the fossil-rich layers of Morocco. Trilobites are one of the most iconic and ancient fossil groups, thriving in Earth’s oceans for over 270 million years before going extinct around 252 million years ago.

The name “Trilobite” means “Three Lobes”, referring to their distinctive three-part body structure: a head (cephalon), segmented body (thorax), and tail (pygidium). These early marine arthropods were among the most successful and widespread animals of their time, adapting to numerous ecological niches as scavengers, predators, and filter feeders.

Diacalymene trilobites are particularly appreciated for their well-defined features and elegant segmentation, often preserved in exceptional detail due to fine sedimentation during the Ordovician period (approx. 485 to 443 million years ago). This specific trilobite specimen is a great educational tool and a wonderful piece for collectors and fossil enthusiasts alike.

While complete trilobites are found, it is more common to discover partial specimens, missing sections such as the cephalon or pygidium due to natural fossilisation processes. Fossils vary in size, ranging from just a few millimetres to over 30 centimetres (12 inches) depending on the species.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
