Description

Offered here is a genuine fossil specimen of Diacalymene, a genus of trilobite from the order Phacopida, suborder Calymenina. This fossil originates from the renowned Kem Kem Basin of Morocco, a region known for yielding a wide variety of well-preserved fossil specimens from various geological eras.

Diacalymene lived during the Ordovician and Silurian periods, approximately 443 to 485 million years ago, a time when ancient marine ecosystems were flourishing. These trilobites were benthic, bottom-dwelling arthropods that crawled along the seafloor and likely scavenged or fed on organic material. Their segmented exoskeletons and distinctive cephalon (head) structure make them a favourite among fossil collectors and paleontology enthusiasts.

The Kem Kem Basin, while more famously associated with Cretaceous vertebrates, also includes sedimentary layers that contain Paleozoic marine fossils, providing a rich record of ancient invertebrate life. Fossils from this locality are appreciated for their strong preservation and accessibility.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
