Name: Dinosaur Coprolite Fossilised Poo Poop

Age: Morrison Formation, Jurassic

Location: Colorado, USA

Size (picture scale cube=1cm): 43 x 28 x 46mm (1.69 x 1.1 x 1.81 inches)

Coprolite, meaning “Dung Stone”, is fossilised faeces poo. Dinosaurs were no different to us today, in the fact that their bodies had to dispose of unwanted waste that had been created from eating food, just like us! Though unfortunately for the dinosaurs there were no ‘toilets’ available that they could use to flush away the evidence!! But that’s good news for us, as these fossilised remains serve an extremely valuable purpose in paleontology, as they provide direct evidence of whether the animal was a plant eating herbivore or a meat eating carnivore. Coprolites range in size from a few millimetres to well over 50 centimetres, and are surprisingly colourful and completely odourless!

Description

This listing features a genuine Dinosaur Coprolite fossil from the Morrison Formation, dating to the Jurassic Period (approximately 155 to 148 million years ago). It was discovered in Colorado, USA, a site well-known for its abundant and diverse dinosaur fossil record.

Coprolite—literally meaning “Dung Stone”—is the fossilised remains of dinosaur faeces. As strange as it may sound, these ancient poo specimens are of great scientific value. Coprolites provide paleontologists with direct insight into the diet and digestive processes of prehistoric creatures. Whether from a plant-eating herbivore or a meat-eating carnivore, each coprolite tells a unique story about the long-lost ecosystems of the Mesozoic Era.

Unlike regular fossils of bones or teeth, coprolites can reveal what dinosaurs ate, how they digested their food, and even which species they may have interacted with. This makes them a vital part of fossil collections and educational exhibits.

Coprolites are completely odourless, often exhibit surprising and beautiful colours due to mineralisation over millions of years, and range in size from just a few millimetres to well over half a metre.

This specimen has been professionally cleaned and selected, and is ideal for fossil collectors, educators, science enthusiasts, or anyone looking for a unique natural history conversation piece.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
