Name: Dinosaur Coprolite Fossilised Poo Poop

Age: Morrison Formation, Jurassic

Location: Colorado, USA

Size (picture scale cube=1cm):   41 x 46 x 41mm (1.61 x 1.81 x 1.61 inches)

Coprolite, meaning “Dung Stone”, is fossilised faeces poo. Dinosaurs were no different to us today, in the fact that their bodies had to dispose of unwanted waste that had been created from eating food, just like us. Though unfortunately for the dinosaurs there were no ‘toilets’ available that they could use to flush away the evidence, but that’s good news for us, as these fossilised remains serve an extremely valuable purpose in palaeontology, as they provide direct evidence of whether the animal was a plant eating herbivore or a meat eating carnivore. Coprolites range in size from a few millimetres to well over 50 centimetres, and are surprisingly colourful and completely odourless.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

What is Coprolite?

Coprolite is fossilised excrement from prehistoric animals. Unlike most fossils which are hard tissue (bone or shell), coprolites are the mineralised remains of soft biological waste, preserved over time through a process called permineralisation. Minerals like silica, calcite, and iron infiltrate the dung, preserving its shape, colour, and sometimes even the content!

This coprolite originated from a dinosaur species that roamed the lush Jurassic landscapes of North America, possibly a herbivorous sauropod or a carnivorous theropod. Fossilised dung can be surprisingly colourful, ranging in hues from deep browns to reds, greens, or even purples depending on the minerals that replaced the original organic material.

Why is Coprolite Important?

  • Offers rare and direct insight into prehistoric diets
  • Helps scientists determine if the dinosaur was a carnivore or herbivore
  • May contain bone fragments, plant matter, or shell, visible under magnification
  • Adds unique variety to any fossil or natural history collection
  • Fascinating educational specimen for schools, museums, or curious collectors

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
