Specimen: Dinosaur Coprolite (Fossil Poo)

Age: Morrison Formation, Jurassic

Location: Colorado, USA

Size (picture scale cube=1cm): 62 x 41 x 41mm (2.44 x 1.61 x 1.61 inches)

Coprolite, meaning “Dung Stone”, is fossilised faeces (poo). Dinosaurs were no different to us today, in the fact that their bodies had to dispose of unwanted waste that had been created from eating food, just like us! Though unfortunately for the dinosaurs there were no ‘toilets’ available that they could use to flush away the evidence!! But that’s good news for us, as these fossilised remains serve an extremely valuable purpose in paleontology, as they provide direct evidence of whether the animal was a plant eating herbivore or a meat eating carnivore. Coprolites range in size from a few millimetres to well over 50 centimetres, and are surprisingly colourful and completely odourless!

About Coprolites:

Although they may raise a few eyebrows, coprolites are an incredibly important type of trace fossil that provide direct insight into the diet and digestion of ancient animals—including dinosaurs. Unlike bones or teeth, coprolites are a direct record of what an animal actually consumed.

Depending on their size, texture, and composition, coprolites can tell palaeontologists whether the dinosaur was a plant-eating herbivore or a meat-eating carnivore, and even offer clues about the types of food present in ancient ecosystems.

Coprolites from the Morrison Formation may have been produced by large dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, Allosaurus, or Diplodocus—giants of the Jurassic world.

Fun Facts:

  • Coprolites can range from tiny pellets to massive 50+ cm chunks
  • Often colourful, ranging from earthy browns to reds and greys depending on mineral content
  • They are completely odourless and solidified by natural mineralisation
  • Serve as important palaeontological evidence for ancient digestion and ecology

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
