Coprolite, meaning “Dung Stone”, is fossilised faeces (poo)! Dinosaurs were no different to animals of today in the fact that their bodies had to dispose of unwanted waste that had been created from eating food! Though unfortunately for these Dinosaurs there were no willing owners that were prepared to follow them around & clean up the mess!! But that’s good news for us, as these fossilised remains serve an extremely valuable purpose in paleontology, as they provide direct evidence of whether the Dinosaur was a plant eating herbivore or a meat-eating carnivore. Coprolites can range in size from a few millimetres to well over 50cm and are surprisingly colourful and completely odourless!

Description

Available here is a genuine polished dinosaur coprolite—yes, fossilised dinosaur poo! This specimen comes from the Jurassic-aged Morrison Formation in Colorado, USA, and is approximately 150 million years old. It has been partially polished to highlight its internal mineralisation and show off its surprising natural colouration.

Coprolite comes from the Greek words kopros (dung) and lithos (stone), literally meaning “dung stone”. These fossils are the preserved remains of ancient faeces and are immensely valuable to paleontologists because they offer direct insight into dinosaur diets and digestive systems. They can reveal whether a dinosaur was a plant-eating herbivore or a meat-eating carnivore, and sometimes even contain preserved bone, plant material, or scales.

Although humorous in nature, coprolites are also scientifically significant. Their mineral content and preservation can tell us a great deal about the ancient environment in which they formed. They are completely odourless, often beautifully coloured due to the minerals that replaced the organic matter during fossilisation, and range in size from just a few millimetres to over half a metre.

Geological Context: This specimen comes from the Morrison Formation, one of North America’s most iconic dinosaur-bearing units. Formed during the Late Jurassic, this formation is world-famous for yielding fossils of dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, and many more. The region once hosted lush floodplains and river systems, ideal for both life and the preservation of fossils like coprolites.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
