Titanosaurs were a diverse group of Sauropod Dinosaurs which were present about 136 to 66 million years ago. They were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, but despite their huge body size, the eggs of Titanosaurus were relatively small in comparison. Females would dig holes with their back feet, lay around 25 eggs in the ‘nest’ then conceal them with a layer of dirt and vegetation for warmth, and protection from predators!

Description

Own a remarkable piece of Earth’s prehistoric history with this genuine Titanosaur Dinosaur Eggshell Fossil, collected from Cretaceous deposits in France. This unique specimen offers a tangible connection to the age of dinosaurs—specifically one of the largest land animals to have ever lived.

Titanosaurs were a globally distributed group of sauropod dinosaurs, thriving from approximately 136 to 66 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period. These colossal herbivorous reptiles could reach lengths of up to 40 metres, yet their eggs were surprisingly modest in size, often no larger than a modern-day football.

Female titanosaurs are believed to have laid their eggs in shallow ground nests, concealing them beneath layers of soil and plant matter for incubation and protection from predators. The fragmented eggshells left behind offer rare insights into dinosaur nesting behaviour, embryonic development, and the paleoecology of Cretaceous landscapes.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
