Titanosaurs were a diverse group of Sauropod Dinosaurs which were present about 136 to 66 million years ago. They were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, but despite their huge body size, the eggs of Titanosaurus were relatively small in comparison. Females would dig holes with their back feet, lay around 25 eggs in the ‘nest’ then conceal them with a layer of dirt and vegetation for warmth and protection from predators.

**The fossil is a carefully chosen piece, with a photo that shows the actual specimen you will receive. **

Description

Now available is a genuine fossil specimen from a Titanosaur—one of the most impressive and iconic groups of dinosaurs to have ever walked the Earth. This authentic piece dates to the Cretaceous Period, roughly 136 to 66 million years ago, and offers a rare, tangible connection to the giants of prehistory.

Titanosaurs were an exceptionally diverse group of sauropod dinosaurs. They were herbivorous, long-necked, and among the largest land animals in Earth’s history, with some species exceeding 30 metres (98 feet) in length and weighing over 70 tonnes. Despite their colossal size, they laid relatively small eggs, burying them in shallow nests and covering them with vegetation for incubation—an insight into their fascinating reproductive behaviour.

Why Titanosaurs Are Significant:

Titanosaurs flourished during the Late Cretaceous, dominating landscapes across South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and even Antarctica. Unlike earlier sauropods, their fossils suggest broader feet, possibly adapted for more varied terrain. Their wide distribution and evolutionary success make them crucial to understanding sauropod development and extinction.

Fossils from titanosaurs are often found in the form of bone fragments, vertebrae, limb pieces, or eggshells. Due to their age and the difficulty in preserving such massive animals, any piece of a Titanosaur is highly collectible and scientifically valuable.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
