Dolikephalites Ammonite Fossil | Lower Callovian, Jurassic | Cotswolds Water Park, Gloucestershire UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£48.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Dolikephalites sp., a fascinating and less common genus of ammonite from the Lower Callovian Stage of the Jurassic Period. This specimen was found at Cotswolds Water Park in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, and forms part of the distinguished Alice Purnell Collection, known for its scientifically significant and well-preserved British fossil specimens.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Dolikephalites is a genus of ammonites within the superfamily Stephanoceratoidea, and is characterised by relatively small, involute shells with fine ribbing and tight coiling. Though less widely known than some of its contemporaries, Dolikephalites is an important taxon for understanding ammonite evolution and diversity in the Middle Jurassic seas of Europe.

This specimen was collected from the Oxford Clay Formation, dating to the Lower Callovian (~166–163 million years ago). The Oxford Clay represents a shallow marine environment that once covered much of what is now southern Britain, including Gloucestershire. Calm depositional conditions allowed for excellent fossil preservation, capturing exquisite details of ammonite shells and associated marine life.

Cotswolds Water Park is a prominent site for amateur and professional fossil hunters alike, offering ammonites in their original clay or limestone matrix. Fossils from this locality are well-regarded for their clarity of ribbing, suture lines, and three-dimensional preservation.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
