Overview of the Specimen

Offered here is a striking Double Cymbites calcite ammonite fossil, a carefully selected natural association preserved within the famous Black Ven Marls of the Jurassic Coast. This specimen displays two Cymbites ammonites together, preserved in pale calcite against the darker marl matrix, creating strong visual contrast and excellent natural definition. The photographs show the exact fossil you will receive, and full sizing details can be seen clearly in the images. As with all of our fossils, this specimen is 100% genuine and is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Geological Formation & Age

This fossil originates from Black Ven, Charmouth, near Lyme Regis, Dorset, England—one of the most celebrated fossil localities in the world and part of the UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast. The Black Ven Marls belong to the Lower Lias Group, dating to the Early Jurassic, approximately 195–190 million years old. These finely bedded marine marls were deposited in a relatively deep, calm offshore environment, ideal for the preservation of delicate ammonite shells and occasional multiple associations such as this example.

Fossil Type & Species

Cymbites is a distinctive genus of ammonite characterised by its evolute coiling, broad whorls, and gently rounded flanks. In this specimen, the shells are preserved with calcite replacement, highlighting growth lines and natural curvature while retaining the original form of the animal. Ammonites belong to the Class Cephalopoda, Subclass Ammonoidea, an extinct group of marine molluscs related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Their rapid evolution and wide distribution make them among the most important index fossils in stratigraphy.

Morphology & Preservation

The two ammonites are naturally positioned within the same slab, making this a genuine double association rather than a composite. Calcite preservation enhances surface detail and provides a subtle crystalline sheen under light, while the surrounding marl retains the original sedimentary context. This type of preservation is typical of Black Ven material and is highly sought after by collectors for its authenticity and scientific value.

Scientific & Collecting Significance

Lower Lias ammonites from Charmouth and Lyme Regis are internationally recognised and have been studied for over two centuries. Specimens from Black Ven are particularly valued due to the continuous exposure of fossil-bearing strata and the exceptional diversity of ammonites recovered from this area. A double Cymbites specimen is less common than single examples and offers added interest for collectors, educators, and displays.

Display, Care & Authenticity

This fossil is ideal for display in a cabinet, study collection, or educational setting. No artificial restoration has been applied beyond careful cleaning to reveal natural features. As always, the fossil you see is the fossil you will receive, and it comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its origin and genuineness.

A genuine piece of Britain’s Jurassic marine history, this Double Cymbites ammonite from Black Ven represents both natural beauty and deep geological time.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
