This genuine Dumortieria moorei ammonite comes from the celebrated Cotswold Cephalopod Bed at Coaley Wood, near Uley in Gloucestershire, England. Dating to the Upper Toarcian stage of the Lower Jurassic, it represents an ancient marine animal that lived roughly 174 to 182 million years ago. During the Toarcian, the area that is now Gloucestershire lay beneath a warm epicontinental sea. Dumortieria was a genus of coiled marine cephalopod, related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Its shell was internally divided into chambers. The animal occupied the final living chamber, while the older sealed chambers helped it control buoyancy. Dumortieria ammonites typically display an evolute coiling style in which much of the earlier whorl remains visible, together with fine ribbing that gives the shell its distinctive ornament.

The preserved shape, rib pattern, natural matrix and surface texture of this specimen reveal part of that original shell architecture.
