Geology and Age
The Lower Bathonian represents an interval of the Middle Jurassic Period approximately 168 to 166 million years ago. During this time, southern Britain lay beneath warm, shallow seas. Fine mud, carbonate material and other marine sediments accumulated across the seafloor and were eventually compacted into the rocks now known as the Fuller’s Earth Formation.
