Echioceras Ammonite Fossil Type

Echioceras is an extinct genus of ammonite from the Early Jurassic, particularly associated with Lower Lias marine deposits. Ammonites were shelled cephalopods, related to modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus. They lived in ancient seas and are among the most iconic fossils of the Jurassic Period, prized for their coiled shells, chambered internal structure, and attractive ribbed ornament.

Echioceras ammonites are typically recognised for their planispiral coiling and strong, regular ribbing. The shell form is generally evolute, meaning the whorls are more open and the earlier coils can often be seen. These features make Echioceras a popular fossil among collectors because it combines classic ammonite shape with distinctive Jurassic shell ornament. As a cut and polished specimen, this fossil also reveals internal detail that is not always visible on the outer surface, including chamber structure, mineral infill, and the natural patterns created during fossilisation.

Lower Lias Geology and Jurassic Age

The Lower Lias is part of the Early Jurassic marine sequence exposed along the Dorset coast. These rocks were deposited when southern Britain lay beneath a warm epicontinental sea rich in marine life. Fine muds, silts, and carbonate-rich sediments accumulated on the sea floor, preserving ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, crinoids, fish remains, marine reptile bones, and many other fossils.

Lower Lias ammonites are especially important in geology because ammonite species evolved rapidly and are widely used for dating and correlating Jurassic rock layers. Fossils such as Echioceras help represent the rich ammonite faunas that make the Charmouth and Lyme Regis coast one of the most famous fossil-collecting regions in the world. The specimen comes from a classic British Jurassic setting with a long history of palaeontological study and fossil discovery.

Jurassic Coast, Charmouth and Lyme Regis Provenance

Stonebarrow, Charmouth, and Lyme Regis are part of the world-renowned Jurassic Coast of Dorset, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional geology and fossil record. The cliffs and foreshore exposures in this area reveal a remarkable sequence of Mesozoic rocks, including the fossil-rich Lower Lias. This coastline has produced many important fossils and has been central to British palaeontology for generations.

Ammonites from the Charmouth and Lyme Regis area are highly collectable because of their historic locality, attractive preservation, and strong association with classic Jurassic marine environments. A genuine Echioceras ammonite from this region is both a decorative natural object and a meaningful piece of geological history from one of the most famous fossil coastlines in the world.

Cut and Polished Display Specimen

This ammonite has been cut and polished to enhance its natural beauty and expose the internal fossil structure. The polished face may show chamber divisions, mineralised infill, shell cross-section, and natural colour variation formed during burial and mineral replacement over millions of years. This preparation style makes the fossil ideal for display in a fossil cabinet, study collection, natural history room, office, educational setting, or decorative interior.

Each fossil is unique, shaped by the original shell, the ancient sea-floor environment, burial conditions, mineralisation, and careful preparation. This specimen is sold as the actual fossil shown in the photo, so you can purchase with confidence knowing the piece pictured is the one you will receive. With its Echioceras identification, Lower Lias age, Jurassic Coast provenance, and Dorset origin, this is a desirable genuine ammonite fossil for collectors of British fossils, polished ammonites, Jurassic specimens, and natural history pieces.
