Description
For sale is a genuine Edmontosaurus fossil tooth, discovered in the Lance Creek Formation of Eastern Wyoming, USA, and dating back to the Late Cretaceous period (~66 to 70 million years ago). This remarkable specimen offers a direct link to one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to walk the Earth before the mass extinction event.
Edmontosaurus, meaning “lizard from Edmonton,” was a member of the hadrosaurid family—commonly known as duck-billed dinosaurs due to their broad, flattened snouts. These herbivorous dinosaurs roamed the lush floodplains of North America and are some of the most well-represented dinosaurs in the fossil record.
Among the largest of the hadrosaurs, Edmontosaurus could grow up to 12 metres (39 feet) in length and weigh over 4 metric tons, with some exceptional specimens like Edmontosaurus annectens believed to have reached 15 metres (49 feet) and 9 metric tons. Notably, some fossils have preserved skin impressions and possible gut contents, providing unparalleled insight into their biology and life appearance.
This particular tooth is a beautifully preserved example of Edmontosaurus’s complex dental battery system, adapted for processing fibrous plant material. The teeth were continually replaced and formed tight interlocking rows, perfect for grinding tough vegetation.
Geological Context: The Lance Creek Formation of Wyoming is world-renowned for its rich deposits of Late Cretaceous vertebrate fossils, including Edmontosaurus, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex, and more. These fossils represent ecosystems that existed just before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction.
