Edmontosaurus (meaning ‘lizard from Edmonton’) is a genus of hadrosaurid (duck-billed) dinosaur. Edmontosaurus included some of the largest hadrosaurid species, measuring up to 12 metres (39 ft) long and weighing around 4.0 metric tons (4.4 short tons). Evidence does exist in the form of two fossilised specimens housed at the Museum of the Rockies for an even greater maximum size of 15 m (49 ft) and weighing 9.07 metric tons (10.00 short tons) for Edmontosaurus annectens. Several well-preserved specimens are known that include not only bones, but in some cases extensive skin impressions and possible gut contents. It is classified as a genus of saurolophine (or hadrosaurine) hadrosaurid, a member of the group of hadrosaurids which lacked large, hollow crests, instead having smaller solid crests or fleshy combs.

Description

This listing features an authentic fossilised tooth from Edmontosaurus, a large genus of hadrosaurid (duck-billed) dinosaurs that roamed what is now North America during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70–66 million years ago. This specimen was discovered in the Lance Creek Formation of Eastern Wyoming, USA, a site renowned for its rich deposits of Late Cretaceous vertebrate fossils.

Edmontosaurus (meaning “lizard from Edmonton”) was a remarkable herbivorous dinosaur, known for its broad, flattened beak similar to that of a duck. It belonged to the group Saurolophinae, hadrosaurids without large hollow crests. Instead, Edmontosaurus may have had a small solid crest or even a fleshy display structure on its head.

These dinosaurs were some of the largest ornithopods, with adults measuring up to 12 metres (39 feet) long and weighing as much as 4 metric tonnes, with the largest specimens possibly reaching 15 metres (49 feet) and weighing over 9 metric tonnes. Remarkably, several fossil specimens have preserved not just bone, but also skin impressions, making Edmontosaurus one of the most well-understood dinosaurs of its kind.

This genuine dinosaur tooth fossil is a rare and exciting glimpse into the life of these gentle herbivores. The tooth was part of a complex dental battery, allowing Edmontosaurus to grind down fibrous plant material efficiently. The teeth were continually replaced throughout their lifetime, meaning shed teeth like this one are sometimes found fossilised.

Whether you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, fossil collector, or simply seeking a unique gift, this specimen offers an educational and impressive piece of natural history from the age of dinosaurs.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
