Genuine Epicheloniceras Pyritized Ammonite Fossil

This carefully chosen specimen is a genuine Epicheloniceras sp. pyritized ammonite fossil from Russia. It dates to the Upper Aptian interval of the Lower Cretaceous and represents an extinct marine cephalopod that inhabited an ancient sea more than 110 million years ago.

The identification Epicheloniceras sp. indicates that the fossil can be assigned to the genus Epicheloniceras, while no individual species name has been applied. This preserves an accurate scientific identification without attributing the specimen to a more precise species than its recorded details and visible characteristics support.

Epicheloniceras belongs to the ammonite order Ammonitida and is associated with the family Douvilleiceratidae, a notable group of strongly ornamented Lower Cretaceous ammonites. Members of this group are recognised for their robust shells, pronounced ribbing and tuberculate ornament, giving them a bold and highly sculptural appearance.

Distinctive Ammonite Shell Morphology

The shell of Epicheloniceras was planispirally coiled, meaning that successive whorls developed within a single plane around a central umbilicus. The shell was divided internally into numerous chambers separated by walls called septa. The living animal occupied the final and largest section, known as the body chamber, while the earlier chambered section formed the phragmocone.

A narrow tube called the siphuncle connected the chambers. By regulating the proportions of liquid and gas within them, the ammonite could control its buoyancy and maintain its position within the water column.

Epicheloniceras is known for strong radial ribs that extend across the shell. Depending on growth stage and preservation, these ribs may be simple or divided and may carry raised tubercles or nodes. Such ornament strengthened the shell and produced the distinctive rugged appearance associated with douvilleiceratid ammonites.

Visible features on this specimen may include sections of coiled whorls, the umbilical region, ribs, tubercles, the ventral margin, chamber divisions or areas of surrounding matrix. Natural fractures, incomplete shell margins, worn ornament and mineral-filled cracks are normal characteristics of an authentic fossil and reflect its burial and preservation over geological time.

Natural Pyritized Preservation

This specimen is described as pyritized because iron sulphide formed during fossilisation and replaced or coated parts of the original shell or internal mould. Pyrite is often known as “fool’s gold” because of its metallic lustre and brass-yellow colour.

Pyritization commonly develops when an organism is buried in sediment containing organic matter under low-oxygen conditions. As the soft tissues and organic material decayed, chemical reactions involving iron and sulphur promoted the growth of pyrite within and around the shell.

This process can preserve fine shell details, including ribs, tubercles, sutures and chamber boundaries. The amount and appearance of pyrite vary naturally between specimens, producing individual combinations of metallic gold, bronze, dark grey or brown tones.

Pyritized fossils should be kept dry and stored away from prolonged humidity or rapid temperature changes. Stable indoor display conditions help protect the mineral surface and maintain the specimen’s appearance.

Life in the Upper Aptian Sea

During the Upper Aptian, Epicheloniceras lived in a marine environment populated by a wide variety of invertebrates and vertebrates. Ammonites shared these waters with belemnites, bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, crustaceans, fish and marine reptiles.

The living ammonite possessed a soft body extending from the shell aperture, with arms surrounding a hard beak-like mouth. It was related to modern cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish, octopuses and nautiluses.

Its chambered shell provided buoyancy, while movement was probably achieved through controlled jet propulsion. The animal may have fed on small crustaceans, planktonic organisms and other marine prey. Its strongly ornamented shell would have affected both hydrodynamics and resistance to physical damage or predation.

After death, the soft tissues decomposed and the shell descended to the seabed. Sediment entered exposed chambers and gradually buried the remains. Under suitable chemical conditions, pyrite formed within the fossil as the surrounding sediment compacted and hardened.

Upper Aptian Lower Cretaceous Geology

The Aptian is a stage within the Lower Cretaceous Period. The Upper Aptian represents the later part of this interval, when extensive marine environments covered large regions of Europe and Asia.

Sediments deposited in these seas included mud, clay, marl, limestone and organic-rich material. Fine-grained seabed conditions could bury ammonite shells relatively quickly, protecting their ornament from complete destruction and creating favourable environments for mineral replacement.

Ammonites are especially important in Lower Cretaceous geology because they evolved rapidly and were widely distributed through ancient seas. Their changing forms allow palaeontologists to compare rock sequences and establish relative ages through ammonite biozones.

Epicheloniceras is characteristic of Aptian marine deposits and forms part of the diverse ammonite radiation that occurred during the Lower Cretaceous. Its strong ribs and tubercles distinguish it from many smoother or more compressed ammonite groups.

Authentic Russian Collectors Specimen

This fossil has recorded Russian provenance, connecting it to the extensive Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks exposed across parts of the country. Russia contains numerous marine formations preserving ammonites from the ancient basins that once occupied northern Eurasia.

The combination of Upper Aptian age, identifiable Epicheloniceras morphology and natural pyritized preservation gives this specimen strong geological, educational and display interest.
