Description

Genuine Fehlmannites jurensis Ammonite Fossil

This listing is for a genuine Fehlmannites jurensis ammonite fossil from the Upper Jurassic, Lower Oxfordian Stage, collected from Sengenthal, Bavaria, Germany. This carefully chosen fossil is a fine example of a classic European Jurassic ammonite and is ideal for collectors of German fossils, ammonites, fossil cephalopods, prehistoric marine life, natural history specimens, and educational geology display pieces.

The photograph shows the actual fossil specimen you will receive, so the shape, colour, preservation, surface texture, and natural details shown in the image belong to this individual fossil. For full sizing and scale, please see the photo.

Fossil Type and Species Information

This specimen is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, cuttlefish, octopus, and nautilus. Ammonites are among the most recognisable fossils from the Jurassic Period, valued for their spiral shells, varied ornamentation, and scientific importance in dating ancient marine rock layers.

The species is Fehlmannites jurensis, a Jurassic ammonite from the Oxfordian marine deposits of Europe. Like other ammonites, it had a chambered shell divided internally into compartments. The living animal occupied the final outer chamber, while the earlier chambers helped control buoyancy in the water column. This shell structure allowed ammonites to move through ancient seas as successful marine animals for millions of years.

Ammonites are especially desirable to collectors because their shells can preserve growth lines, whorl shape, ribbing, sutures, ornamentation, and natural mineralisation. Depending on the preservation of the individual piece, features may include planispiral coiling, curved whorls, shell relief, fine surface texture, and Jurassic marine fossil character.

Upper Jurassic Lower Oxfordian Age

This fossil dates from the Upper Jurassic Period, specifically the Lower Oxfordian, placing it at approximately around 163 to 160 million years old. The Oxfordian was an important stage in ammonite evolution, with many diverse ammonite groups living in warm marine environments across Europe.

During the Lower Oxfordian, much of central and western Europe was covered by shallow epicontinental seas. These ancient seas supported a rich ecosystem of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods, crinoids, sponges, corals, fish, and marine reptiles. Fine marine sediments accumulated on the sea floor, gradually burying shells and hard parts. Over millions of years, these remains became mineralised and preserved as fossils within Jurassic rock layers.

Sengenthal, Bavaria, Germany Geology

This specimen comes from Sengenthal, Bavaria, Germany, a region associated with fossil-bearing Jurassic strata. Bavaria is well known among fossil collectors and palaeontologists for its Upper Jurassic rocks, marine limestones, and ammonite-rich deposits. Fossils from this region are popular because they combine attractive natural preservation with strong geological context and classic European locality information.

German Jurassic fossils are particularly appealing to collectors who value well-documented specimens. A fossil with clear species, age, and locality data is more desirable than an unlabelled decorative piece, as it can be properly displayed, catalogued, and studied within a fossil collection.

Natural Jurassic Marine Display Fossil

This Fehlmannites jurensis ammonite fossil is a genuine natural specimen and would make an excellent addition to a fossil cabinet, geology collection, teaching set, curiosity cabinet, or prehistoric marine life display. It is suitable for collectors of ammonites, Jurassic fossils, German fossils, Oxfordian fossils, cephalopod fossils, and natural history specimens.

As with all genuine fossils, the specimen may show natural characteristics such as matrix, mineral staining, surface texture, small cracks, weathering, repaired areas, or variations in preservation. These features are part of the fossil’s natural history and help demonstrate its authenticity as a real prehistoric specimen.

Certificate of Authenticity Included

This fossil is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. This gives reassurance that the fossil supplied is authentic and suitable for collecting, study, display, gifting, resale, or educational use.

You will receive the exact Fehlmannites jurensis ammonite fossil shown in the photo, from the Upper Jurassic Lower Oxfordian of Sengenthal, Bavaria, Germany.
