These genuine 10 Million Year Old Shark teeth were found in Florida, USA, from sharks that once controlled the oceans above that area. When a sharks teeth become worn the predator will ‘shed’ these teeth, and these will be replaced with new sharper, stronger teeth. However, unlike humans, Sharks are known for re-shedding hundreds of teeth on a regular basis, which makes them a fruitful find with fossil hunters.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Authentic Florida Shark Tooth Fossil – Miocene Epoch

This listing features a genuine fossilised shark tooth from the Miocene Epoch, discovered in Florida, USA, one of the world’s most famous regions for prehistoric shark fossils. The specimen has been carefully selected for preservation, definition, and overall display quality. The photographs show the exact fossil you will receive, and full sizing details can be found in the listing images. As with all our fossils, this shark tooth is 100% genuine and comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Geological Age and Context – The Miocene Seas of Florida

The Miocene Epoch, dating from approximately 23 to 5.3 million years ago, was a time of warm global climates and high sea levels. Much of present-day Florida was submerged beneath shallow, nutrient-rich seas that supported an extraordinary diversity of marine life, including numerous species of sharks.

These ancient seas deposited sands, silts, and shell-rich sediments that now form Florida’s fossil-bearing layers. Shark teeth were continually shed throughout a shark’s lifetime, and many settled onto the sea floor where they were rapidly buried. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater replaced the original organic material, transforming these teeth into durable fossils.

Fossil Type – Shark Tooth

Shark teeth are among the most iconic and collectible marine fossils. Composed originally of dentine and enamel, they fossilise exceptionally well and often retain sharp edges and fine surface details even after millions of years.

This Florida Miocene shark tooth may display features such as:

  • Well-defined crown, reflecting feeding adaptations

  • Sharp cutting edges, sometimes with natural serrations

  • Robust root structure, showing attachment points

  • Natural fossil colouration, ranging from greys to browns and blacks

The specific shape and proportions of the tooth provide insight into the shark’s diet and lifestyle, whether adapted for cutting flesh, grasping prey, or crushing shellfish.

Depositional Environment and Preservation

Florida’s Miocene shark teeth are most commonly preserved in marine sand and shell beds, river gravels, and coastal deposits. These environments allowed teeth to be quickly buried, protecting them from excessive abrasion. Over time, phosphate and other minerals permeated the teeth, giving them their characteristic fossil weight and coloration.

The result is a specimen that is both scientifically informative and visually striking, offering a direct link to ancient marine ecosystems.

Scientific and Collecting Significance

Miocene shark teeth from Florida are prized worldwide due to their quality, abundance, and importance in understanding prehistoric shark evolution. Florida’s fossil record has contributed greatly to studies of shark diversity, climate change, and marine food webs during the Neogene Period.

This specimen is ideal for:

  • Fossil and natural history collections

  • Educational and teaching displays

  • Marine palaeontology enthusiasts

  • Gifts for fossil and shark collectors

Shark teeth are durable, easy to display, and instantly recognisable, making them excellent entry-level fossils as well as valued additions to established collections.

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
