Description
Fossil Dinosaur Iguanodon Bone – Wessex Formation, Wealden Clays – Barremian Stage, Lower Cretaceous – Isle of Wight, England
This genuine dinosaur bone fragment originates from an Iguanodon, one of the most iconic herbivorous dinosaurs of the Early Cretaceous. Discovered on the Isle of Wight, this fossil was preserved within the Wealden Clays of the Wessex Formation, a world-renowned horizon for Lower Cretaceous dinosaur remains in Britain.
Fossil Type: Dinosaur Limb Bone Fragment
Likely Species: Iguanodon bernissartensis or Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis (both common in the Wealden Group)
Order: Ornithischia
Clade: Iguanodontia
Family: Iguanodontidae
Geological Stage: Lower Cretaceous – Barremian (~125–129 million years ago)
Formation: Wessex Formation, Wealden Group
Location: Isle of Wight, England
Depositional Environment: Fluvial (river channel), floodplain and lagoonal – alternating mudstones, siltstones, and sandstones with abundant vertebrate remains
Biozone/Zone: No formal ammonite zones for non-marine Wealden Group; based on vertebrate biostratigraphy
Morphology Features: This bone fragment exhibits the classic dense, mineralised structure of dinosaur limb bone with well-defined internal spongy matrix (cancellous bone) and a solid cortical layer. Fossils from the Wealden Group often display preservation in shades of dark brown, grey, or black due to iron and phosphate mineralisation over millions of years.
Geological Context: The Wessex Formation, part of the Wealden Group, is an important Lower Cretaceous terrestrial deposit. It has yielded numerous dinosaur species including Iguanodon, Baryonyx, Neovenator, Polacanthus, and Hypsilophodon. The Isle of Wight is known as the richest dinosaur fossil site in Europe and is often dubbed the “Dinosaur Capital of the UK.”
Condition: As shown in photographs. Natural surface with visible bone texture and structure. Scale rule squares/cube = 1cm. Please refer to image for full sizing.
