Description

This listing features a rare and genuine Deltablastoid fossil, an extinct echinoderm from the Permian Period (approximately 298 to 252 million years ago). It was discovered in the fossil-rich region of Timor, Indonesia, a site well known for preserving remarkable specimens from the ancient seas of the Paleozoic Era.

Deltablastoids belonged to a class of echinoderms that lived in marine environments, related to modern sea stars and sea urchins. Unlike most echinoderms, blastoids such as the Deltablastoid had a distinct, hardened theca (body) made of calcite plates, with five-fold symmetry and feeding grooves that formed a star-like pattern—making them highly desirable collector specimens due to their aesthetic and biological interest.

This echinoid would have lived attached to the seafloor by a short stalk, filtering microscopic particles from the water with its delicate feeding appendages. Deltablastoids went extinct at the end of the Permian period in the largest mass extinction event in Earth’s history, making any surviving fossils exceedingly rare and historically significant.

The specimen has been carefully cleaned and preserved, displaying clear morphological features that represent its evolutionary placement in early echinoderm development.

The Permian Period (299–252 million years ago) was a time of dramatic climate shifts and evolutionary advancements, marking the end of the Paleozoic Era. Initially, the climate was warm and humid, supporting vast conifer forests and swampy environments, but it gradually became drier as the supercontinent Pangaea fully formed. This led to the expansion of early reptiles, including synapsids like Dimetrodon, which were distant ancestors of mammals. Amphibians thrived in wetlands, while the first conifer trees became dominant. In the oceans, ammonites, brachiopods, and early sharks flourished. However, the Permian ended with the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history, the Permian-Triassic Extinction, wiping out nearly 90% of marine species and 70% of land species, paving the way for the rise of dinosaurs in the Triassic.
