Fossil Fish Bone in Block – Triassic Westbury Formation – Aust Cliff Bristol UK – Genuine with Certificate

Original price was: £12.60.Current price is: £11.34.

An authentic Fossil Fish Bone, embedded within a matrix block from the famous fish, reptile, and coprolite bed at Aust Cliff, Bristol, UK. This specimen was discovered by our field team, Alister and Alison, on 07 April 2025 and has been professionally cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison.

This specimen originates from the Westbury Formation, part of the Penarth Group, and dates to the Upper Triassic, specifically the Rhaetian Stage (~208–201 million years ago). Aust Cliff is a renowned UK fossil site rich in vertebrate material, and this fossil likely represents remains from extinct early actinopterygian (ray-finned) fishes common to the period.

The fossil bone exhibits excellent structural preservation, with possible fin support or axial skeletal elements visible, showcasing the elongate and tapering morphology often associated with predatory fishes of the time. These beds are deposited in an estuarine to nearshore marine environment, indicating a habitat where both marine reptiles and bony fishes coexisted.

Triassic Information

The Triassic Period (252–201 million years ago) marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the most severe extinction event in Earth's history. The climate was hot and dry, with vast deserts and little polar ice. Life slowly recovered, leading to the rise of the first dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), and early mammals. Reptiles, including large archosaurs (ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs), dominated both land and sea. In the oceans, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs thrived alongside ammonites and early coral reefs. The first true conifers and ginkgo trees spread across the land. The period ended with another mass extinction, paving the way for the Jurassic and the golden age of dinosaurs.
