Prehistoric Fish are early fish that are known only from fossil records. They are the earliest known vertebrates, and include the fish that lived through the Cambrian to the Quaternary Periods. The study of prehistoric fish is called paleoichthyology. Fish have played, and continue to play, a vital role throughout the seas & waterways of our planet, providing larger sea, land & sky creatures an abundant food source for their survival.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Genuine Cretaceous Vertebra Fossil from Folkestone’s Famous Gault Clay

Offered here is a genuine fish or shark vertebra fossil, preserved within the internationally renowned Gault Clay Formation of Folkestone, Kent, England. The Gault Clay is one of the most important marine fossil deposits in Europe, producing an extraordinary range of well-preserved vertebrate remains from the Cretaceous Period.

This fossil is a carefully chosen specimen, and the photograph shows the exact piece you will receive. Full sizing details are provided in the listing images.

Every purchase includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming this fossil as a genuine prehistoric marine specimen.

Fossil Type – Fish or Shark Vertebrae (Marine Vertebrate Fossil)

Vertebrae fossils are highly evocative remains, representing the backbone structure of ancient marine animals. In the Cretaceous seas, both bony fish and sharks were abundant predators and prey within complex ocean ecosystems.

Fossil vertebrae are valued because they provide direct evidence of the internal skeletal anatomy of prehistoric marine life. Vertebra specimens from the Gault Clay are especially collectible due to the formation’s fine sediment preservation.

Notable features often seen in fossil vertebrae include:

  • Rounded or disc-like centrum shape

  • Natural mineral replacement preserving structure

  • Textured surfaces from cartilage or bone growth

  • Geological staining from marine sediment burial

Each vertebra is a tangible relic from a creature that swam in the ancient oceans more than 100 million years ago.

Geological Setting – The Gault Clay Formation

The Gault Clay dates to the Albian Stage of the Early Cretaceous, approximately 100–110 million years ago. At that time, much of southern Britain was submerged beneath a warm, shallow sea rich in marine biodiversity.

Fine clay sediments settled slowly on the seabed, creating low-energy conditions ideal for fossil preservation. Folkestone is one of the most famous collecting localities for these deposits, known worldwide for exceptional fossil material.

Associated fossils from the Gault Clay commonly include:

  • Shark and ray teeth

  • Fish bones and vertebrae

  • Ammonites used for biostratigraphic zoning

  • Marine molluscs and crustaceans

  • Occasional reptile remains

This context makes vertebra fossils from Folkestone both scientifically significant and highly desirable for collectors.

Depositional Environment & Fossil Preservation

The vertebra fossilised after the animal’s remains settled onto the sea floor. Rapid burial in soft clay sediments protected the bone or cartilage from erosion. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater replaced the original biological material, transforming it into durable fossil stone.

The fine-grained nature of the Gault Clay allows vertebrate remains to preserve excellent detail, making these fossils particularly attractive as display pieces.

A Unique Collectible from Britain’s Prehistoric Seas

This fossil vertebra is perfect for:

  • Marine fossil and shark collections

  • British Cretaceous displays

  • Educational teaching specimens

  • Gifts for fossil and geology enthusiasts

Vertebrae fossils are especially compelling because they represent real skeletal anatomy, not just external traces, offering a deeper connection to prehistoric marine animals.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
