Geology & Origin:
The Sooke Formation, part of the Carmanah Group, consists of shallow marine sandstones and siltstones laid down during the Miocene Epoch of the Neogene Period (approximately 23 to 5 million years ago). This temperate marine environment supported a diverse assemblage of molluscs, including the moon snail-like Molopophorus fishii. Exceptional fossil preservation is due to rapid burial in fine marine sediments, which protected delicate shell structures.
