Name: Mantelliceras sp

Species: Ammonite

Age: Cretaceous

Location: Morocco

Size (picture scale cube=1cm): 105 x 47 x 90mm (4.13 x 1.85 x 3.54 inches)

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish!)

These creatures varied in size, ranging from only a few millimetres to some fossils being found measuring a whopping 8 feet 96 inches.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

Own a piece of ancient oceanic history with this genuine Mantelliceras sp. ammonite fossil, a beautifully preserved marine relic from the Cretaceous period, discovered in the rich fossil beds of Morocco. These distinctive spiral-shelled cephalopods roamed the Earth’s seas between 240 and 65 million years ago, making them one of the most iconic and recognisable fossils in the world.

Mantelliceras is a genus of extinct ammonites that lived during the Late Cretaceous, often characterised by their intricately ribbed shell patterns and pronounced suture lines. These ammonites belonged to the subclass Ammonoidea, a now-extinct group of molluscs that are more closely related to modern-day squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish than to the similarly shelled nautilus.

Ammonites like Mantelliceras were fast-moving, free-swimming predators or scavengers, and their shell provided buoyancy as well as protection. Their fossilised remains are widely studied for biostratigraphic dating, helping palaeontologists identify the age of sedimentary layers around the world.

About Ammonites:

Ammonites are among the most sought-after fossils due to their distinctive coiled shells and widespread presence in the fossil record. They are excellent index fossils, used to correlate the age of rock layers across vast geographic regions. Ranging in size from just a few millimetres to over 2 metres (6.5 feet) in diameter, they are as scientifically important as they are visually stunning.

This Mantelliceras specimen is a medium-sized fossil and showcases the classic spiral form with natural surface texture. These fossils are often found in desert regions of Morocco, exposed by erosion from sedimentary rock layers.

ACTUAL AS SEEN:

The specimen in the photographs is the exact item you will receive. It has been carefully hand-selected and professionally photographed to show its unique features. Please note that the natural formation process results in irregularities that contribute to its authenticity.

Measurements are approximate due to the irregular shape of natural fossils. Colouration may differ slightly depending on indoor/outdoor lighting and screen settings.

Important Notes:

  • Fossils may be propped up for photography purposes.
  • Once sold, this listing will be updated with a new, individually photographed specimen.
  • We recommend saving or screenshotting the listing image at the time of purchase for your records.
  • We maintain a visual archive of every item sold.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
