Fossil Nautilus – Cenoceras – Jurassic Black Ven Marls – Charmouth Lyme Regis UK – Genuine with Certificate

Original price was: £360.00.Current price is: £324.00.

A beautifully preserved Fossil Nautilus of the genus Cenoceras, discovered at Stonebarrow Cliff, Charmouth on the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK. This exceptional specimen was unearthed by our own team members Alister and Alison on 26 April 2025, and has been carefully cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison.

This fossil originates from the Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Formation, dating to the Lower Jurassic, approximately 200 to 190 million years ago. The Charmouth area is a world-renowned site for Jurassic marine fossils, particularly cephalopods such as ammonites and nautiloids.

Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid, belonging to a lineage of cephalopods that have survived through vast geological epochs. Unlike the tightly coiled ammonites, nautiloids like Cenoceras had more loosely coiled shells with a central siphuncle, and were efficient swimmers in ancient shallow seas.

This fossil displays the characteristic coiled morphology with gently curving whorls, chamber partitions (septa), and subtle surface patterning—some of which may be weathered due to its age and preservation. It is a genuine, one-of-a-kind specimen, professionally photographed with a 1cm scale cube—please refer to the photo for full sizing.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
