£24.00

Fossil Plant – Acrostichopteris (ruffordi) Pinna

Geological Period: Early Cretaceous (Wealden Group)

Age: Approximately 140 to 125 million years ago

Formation: Weald Clay Formation

Locality: Ecclesbourne Glen, Hastings, East Sussex, UK

This listing features a fine and detailed fossil fern pinna of Acrostichopteris ruffordi, a species of prehistoric vascular plant that flourished in lowland floodplains and swampy environments during the Early Cretaceous. Collected from the historically significant Weald Clay Formation at Ecclesbourne Glen near Hastings, this specimen offers a rare window into the lush vegetation of the Mesozoic era.

Acrostichopteris is part of the fern lineage and is notable for its distinctive frond structure, finely preserved pinnules, and association with other terrestrial flora in Wealden deposits. Fossilised plant remains from the Weald Clay are typically preserved in fine-grained sediments deposited in freshwater to brackish deltaic conditions — environments that supported a rich variety of plant life, including cycads, ginkgos, and conifers, alongside ferns such as this.

The visible pinna (leaflet) displays clear venation and morphology, and the fossil surface reveals the botanical texture and imprint of this ancient fern. A valuable specimen for both collectors and educators alike.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
