Discover a real piece of Earth’s prehistoric flora with this remarkable Eocene fossil plant from the renowned fossil beds of British Columbia, Canada. Formed during the Eocene Epoch, a time of global warmth and ecological expansion, this fossil provides a unique glimpse into ancient vegetation that once thrived in lush, subtropical forests.

This particular fossil captures a beautifully preserved leaf or plant impression, locked within fine-grained sedimentary rock. These impressions are formed when ancient plant matter was rapidly buried by fine silt, mud, or volcanic ash, which over time hardened into shale or mudstone, preserving delicate structures in extraordinary detail.

British Columbia is world-famous for its fossil plant deposits, especially those near sites like McAbee and Driftwood Canyon. The area preserves one of the best collections of Eocene fossil flora globally, providing insight into climate, evolution, and plant ecology from 50 million years ago.

This fossil is an ideal addition for collectors, educators, nature lovers, or anyone intrigued by the legacy of Earth’s deep history.

Key Features:

  • Genuine Eocene plant fossil from a scientifically important site
  • Fine preservation showcasing natural detail and texture
  • Ideal for teaching, display, or fossil collecting
  • Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
  • Ethical and legal sourcing

Geological Context – The Eocene Epoch:

The Eocene Epoch was a period of profound evolutionary change. Flowering plants diversified rapidly, and Earth’s climate was significantly warmer than today. These fossils are remnants of temperate to subtropical forests, helping scientists understand ancient ecosystems, atmospheric CO₂ levels, and the evolution of modern plant families.

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
