Fossil Plant Leaves & Debris – Tranquille Shale, Early–Middle Eocene Epoch, Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada

This natural fossil slab features multiple fossilised plant leaves and debris, offering a snapshot of ancient Eocene forest floor litter. Collected from the renowned Tranquille Shale near Cache Creek, British Columbia, and dating to the Early to Middle Eocene Epoch (~52 to 48 million years ago), this specimen is a fine example of Canada’s exceptional plant fossil record.

Fossil Type & Classification:

  • Type: Plant Fossil Matrix (Leaf and Debris Compression/Impression)
  • Phylum: Tracheophyta (Vascular Plants)
  • Class: Magnoliopsida (Dicotyledons – leaf fragments likely include multiple species)
  • Possible Families/Genera: May include Alnus, Acer, Metasequoia, Platanus, and others (not individually identified)

Geological & Stratigraphic Details:

  • Location: Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada
  • Formation: Tranquille Shale (Kamloops Group)
  • Epoch: Early–Middle Eocene (Ypresian–Lutetian stages)
  • Age: ~52–48 million years ago
  • Depositional Environment: Low-energy lacustrine (lakebed) setting with fine silt and volcanic ash — ideal for preserving scattered organic material and foliage
  • Biozone: McAbee Flora Lagerstätte, known for exceptional fossil plant diversity and preservation

Morphology & Features:

  • Multiple leaf impressions and organic fragments distributed across matrix
  • Midribs, vein traces, and irregular margins visible depending on debris condition
  • Typical ovate and lanceolate leaf forms with overlapping compression patterns
  • Preserved as dark carbonised impressions against a pale to grey shale matrix

Notable: Fossil plant debris assemblages like this offer valuable insights into prehistoric ecosystem dynamics and seasonal deposition events. The McAbee Flora represents one of the richest Eocene fossil plant localities in the world, helping scientists reconstruct forest composition and climate shifts following the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).

Specimen Details:

  • Origin: Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
