Description

This listing features a fossilised shrimp preserved within a natural nodule, dated to the Triassic Period, approximately 252 to 201 million years ago. This genuine specimen was unearthed in Madagascar, a location well known for its exceptional fossil preservation, particularly from marine environments of the Mesozoic era.

The fossil comes as two split halves of the original nodule, revealing the shrimp fossil encased within. These nodules form naturally around the remains of ancient marine creatures, preserving even delicate features in incredible detail over millions of years.

Shrimp, along with other crustaceans, belong to the phylum Arthropoda, and have existed in Earth’s oceans since the Cambrian period. Their hard exoskeleton and fine appendages occasionally fossilise when conditions are perfect, especially in mineral-rich marine sediment—resulting in unique finds like this.

This piece makes a fantastic display item and a talking point, ideal for fossil collectors, science educators, or anyone with a passion for natural history.

Triassic Information

The Triassic Period (252–201 million years ago) marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the most severe extinction event in Earth's history. The climate was hot and dry, with vast deserts and little polar ice. Life slowly recovered, leading to the rise of the first dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), and early mammals. Reptiles, including large archosaurs (ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs), dominated both land and sea. In the oceans, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs thrived alongside ammonites and early coral reefs. The first true conifers and ginkgo trees spread across the land. The period ended with another mass extinction, paving the way for the Jurassic and the golden age of dinosaurs.
