Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around the world due to their familiar spiral shape. They were marine based, present between 240 – 65 million years ago. They are the most  popular fossil for collections and found all over the world. Some ammonites could reach up to 2 metres in size. Children love collecting them, and places like Lyme Regis in Dorset becomes busy during the summer months with many people trying their luck at finding impressions in the rocks of their own ammonites.

Description

This listing features a stunning silver/grey whole ammonite fossil, dating to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 145 million years ago, and found in the fossil-rich layers of Madagascar. These fossils represent an extinct group of marine molluscs that once dominated the world’s oceans for over 175 million years.

Ammonites are best known for their distinctive spiral-shaped shells, making them one of the most recognisable and sought-after fossils globally. Despite their outward resemblance to snails, ammonites were cephalopods, more closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. Their coiled shells consisted of a series of internal chambers used to regulate buoyancy, allowing them to move efficiently through prehistoric seas.

This particular specimen displays a natural pearlescent shimmer, a feature that results from the fossilisation process and mineral content of the shell. The outer surface reflects light in silver, grey, and sometimes subtle rainbow tones, making it especially attractive as a display piece or collector’s item.

Geological Context: Sourced from Madagascar, a country famed for its exceptional fossil preservation, this ammonite was formed in shallow tropical marine sediments during the Cretaceous. These seas were home to diverse marine life, and Madagascar’s fossil beds preserve ammonites in superb detail and condition.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
