Specimen: Amber with Fly Inclusion

Location: Baltic Sea

Age: Eocene

Size (picture scale cube=1cm): 24 x 11 x 4mm

Grade: C

This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses an inclusion.

Amber Inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. which became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday!

GRADE ‘C’: Amber pieces contain inclusions that may be slightly obstructed or an incomplete specimen and may require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in detail.

*We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning frozen detail. At present we have two types of amber available, Baltic Amber & Dominican Amber, their inclusions can include such specimens as flies, gnats, midges, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, seeds, plants & more!

**The fossil is a carefully chosen piece, with a photo that shows the actual specimen you will receive.

Description

Genuine Baltic Amber with Gnat Insect Inclusions – Eocene Epoch (56–33.9 million years ago)

This fascinating specimen is a piece of Baltic Amber, formed during the Eocene Epoch, approximately 56–34 million years ago. It contains Gnat inclusions, beautifully preserved inside the golden amber. The specimen is graded C, meaning the inclusion may be slightly obstructed, incomplete, or require magnification to fully appreciate the details. Despite this, it offers an incredible window into prehistoric life.

Amber is fossilised tree resin (not sap), which has undergone a natural polymerisation process over millions of years. When small creatures such as insects, spiders, or plant material became trapped in the sticky resin, they were preserved in astonishing detail. Over time, the resin hardened into copal, and through further burial and geological processes, it transformed into amber. These inclusions are like snapshots of ancient ecosystems, frozen in time for millions of years.

This specimen provides an extraordinary connection to Earth’s distant past, allowing you to hold a genuine piece of natural history in your hands.

Geological Information:

  • Period: Paleogene
  • Epoch: Eocene (56–33.9 million years ago)
  • Location: Baltic Sea Region
  • Material: Amber (fossilised tree resin) with insect inclusion

Baltic Amber is among the most famous sources of fossil inclusions in the world, known for its clarity and abundance of preserved life forms. It has been studied for centuries by paleontologists and collectors alike, revealing extraordinary details of prehistoric insects and plants.

Why Choose This Fossil?

  • 100% Genuine Specimen
  • Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
  • Fascinating inclusion preserved in natural Baltic Amber
  • Ethically sourced and carefully hand-selected
  • Perfect for collectors, educational study, or as a unique natural history gift

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
