Specimen: Ammonite Fossil Half

Age: Cretaceous Period (~145 to 66 million years ago)

Location: Madagascar

Scale cube = 1cm: Full sizing – please see photo

This stunning fossil is a polished half of an Ammonite, a now-extinct marine mollusc that lived during the Cretaceous period. Ammonites are renowned for their beautiful, spiral-shaped shells and are some of the most instantly recognisable fossils in the world. These ancient cephalopods thrived in oceans around the globe, with Madagascar being one of the richest and most vibrant fossil localities.

What makes this specimen particularly special is its presentation. It has been expertly sliced and polished to reveal the intricate internal chamber structure that once served as gas-filled compartments to help the creature control its buoyancy in the water. The polished interior often displays warm earthy tones—yellows, reds, oranges, and browns—with occasional crystallisation within the chambers, making it both scientifically fascinating and visually captivating.

Ammonites are more closely related to modern-day squid, octopus, and cuttlefish than to shelled creatures like snails. They are a staple in fossil collections, both for their scientific significance and their aesthetic appeal.

These pieces are perfect for fossil collectors, home decor, educational use, or as a gift for anyone who appreciates the natural world.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
